The Everest or Khumbu region is justifiably the most famous of all trekking and mountain regions. Populated by Sherpas, the attractions of this area are the majestic mountains, the high mountain villages, the isolated monasteries, and the local peoples. This area includes the highest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest at 8,848m, and many of the world's 8,000m+ peaks such as Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. Most of the word's trekkers dream to reach one day Everest base camp and see the Mt. Everest up close. There are two major trekking entry points: for those who have only a short holiday there are domestic flights to Lukla from where the trek to Everest base Camp / Kala Pattar begins. If you have a longer holiday you might choose to get the bus to Jiri and start trekking from there. There is always the option to fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla for a last set of thrilling views of the region.

First climbed in 1953, Everest still holds a fascination for many.
