Gokyo, Renjo La pass & Everest Base Camp Trek

Gokyo Renjo La Pass and Everest base camp trek is one of the most challenging routes in the Khumbu (Everest) region. It goes through Lukla-Namche Bazaar- Thamo (3,700 m) and Thame (3900 m) two Sherpa villages, over Ranjo-La Pass and to Gokyo Ri via Gokyo. From Gokyo we cross Nagozumda Glacier to Cho-La Pass, and then follow the way to Everest Base Camp. The lore of the Himalayas looms largest around the great 8,000-metre peak massifs of Cho Oyo, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. The remote valleys beneath these peaks are threaded by ancient trails. Some trails like the well-traveled path to Everest Base camp are well known among Western trekkers and mountaineers. Others including the trail through Nangpa La between Namche Bazar and Tibet are known to Tibetan monks and traders, but have long been forbidden to Westerners. This exploratory trip is our attempt to offer a fresh insight, and to follow sparsely trodden trails and gain new visual perspectives in this area of the highest peaks in the world. This trek also traces the important history of the Sherpa people. Sherpas migrated from the eastern Tibetan province of Salmo Gang and settled in this region in late fifteenth or sixteenth century. They appear to have left their homeland and crossed the Nangpa-La pass (18,749') in to Nepal. The economy of the Sherpa Community has traditionally been based on agriculture, livestock herding and trading between Nepal and Tibet.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu Airport.
You will be met at the airport by our Adventure Jaljale representative and transfered to your hotel in Kathmandu. Rest at the hotel and briefing about the trip. There should be time to explore the city's many charms on your own too. Overnight (O/N) in Kathmandu (breakfast included).

Day 2: Sightseeing around Kathmandu valley.
Leave at 9 am for full day sightseeing in Kathmandu valley including the holiest site in Nepal: the Hindu temple complex at Pashupatinath (a UNESCO world heritage site) & the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath. We can also visit the Shyambhunath a 2000 year old temple colloquially known as the "Monkey Temple" and visit Patan city of fine arts. In the evening there wil be a briefing at your hotel or at the office. O/N at lodge in Kathmandu (breakfast included).

Day 03: Kathmandu to Lukla (28400m) and Phakding: (2652m):
Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and walk approximately 4 hrs. The trail smoothly descends toward Surkhe and passes below to Chaurikharka. The paths weaves through fields of corn, potatoes, wheat and cabbage and reach to Pkakding overnight at teahouse/ lodge.

Day 04: Phakding to Namche Bazzar: (3446m):
Today day approximately 6 hrs walking which passes through the magnificent rhododendron forest river. Several villages provide welcome teashops. Namche Bazzar is the main Sherpa village and it is very old trade center of this area. We can rest in the afternoon and enjoy walking around the village.

Day 05: Rest at Namche Bazaar:
This is the rest day for acclimatization at Namche Bazaar. During the day, you can explore Namche Bazzar & Synbouche hill.

Day 06: Namache to Thame (3820m):
This day is meant for acclimatization and hence we do not embark on any serious trekking. Instead, we go to a slightly lower altitude of Thame, the birthplace of Tenzing Norgay, the first man to climb Everest with Edmund Hilary. Here we can visit the monastery and generally rest for the trek ahead.

Day 07: Thame to Taranga –Lungden:

Today we start our serious high altitude trekking. We walk for about 4 hours through a stunning landscape on an old trade route to Tibet to the village of Lungden. This village has only one lodge and very aptly called the Renjo La Support Lodge.

Day 08: Cross Renjo la Pass (5435m) to Gokyo (4750m):
The big day starts real early and it is a long day, as we have to walk about 5 hours to reach the pass, going slow because of the high altitude. After a brief stopover to enjoy the stunning beauty of the Everest Range and to take photographs, we start on a remarkably difficult downhill journey for about 3 hours to reach the village of Gokyo and then walk along the stunning and beautiful Dudh Kunda.

Day 09: Gokyo Ri (Gokyo Peak) Excursion return Gokyo

The foot of Gokyo Ri lies five minutes away from the stream the feeds the Gokyo Lake. After two to three hours walk you reach the summit where you will be rewarded for your effort by spectacular views. The Everest (8848m), showing more of its northern flank than from Kalapatthar, Makalu (8475m) further to the east and Cho Oyu (8153m) towards the north make a mesmerizing view to sit and watch. Return to Gokyo Ri after spending some time at the summit.

Day 10: Gokyo to Thangna (Dragnag) (4700m)
From Gokyo the trail descends, with views of the fine mountains and valleys, towards Thangna which is considered as the base of Cho -La Pass (5330m) .

Day 11: Thangna (5330m) to Dzonglha (4830m)
Today the trail descends again and leads us across the moraine, to the glacier which we must cross. From here, you can see a beautiful view of the icefall before you reach Dzongla.

Day 12: Dzongla trekking to Lobuche (4920m)
The trail continues along the moraine from Dzongla affording you splendid views of Kala Pattar and Pumori before you reach Lobuche.

Day 13: Lobuche to Gorak Shep .
The trail from Lobuche follows a route, which is surrounded, by mountains. After a gradual climb we will reach Gorak Shep which is also surrounded by mountains. Here we will be nestled high up amongst some of the tallest peaks in the world. The guide will take us along the undulating trail to this much-coveted place to Everest Base Camp (EBC). From here, you can observe the blue ice and the Khumbu icefall, then we head back to Gorek Shep

Day 14: Early in the morning hike to Kalapattar (5545m) then Gorak Shep to Lobuche.
The hike to Kalapattar is arguably the most exciting part of the trip as it includes panoramic views of Mt. Everest, the way of the South Col Khumbu, the icefall and glacier and Pumori as well. Return to Gorek Shep, for Lunch. After lunch, walk down to Lobuche.

Day 15: Dingboche to Tengboche (3860m)
